The New Fairfield Rebels had their home opener on October 1st at 5:00pm against the Brookfield Bobcats. The Bobcats are coached by Megan Casey and Will Hendricks. The New Fairfield Rebels are coached by Jody Chadwick, Steve Ng and Michele Lee. The home opener also served as the Rebel’s Senior Night. Seniors #2 Crystal Gangi, #17 Caroline Keary, #1 Emily Flanagan, #15 Maija Evans, #8 Giovanna Langguth and Manager Nadjhe Mears. celebrated 4 years as Rebel Volleyball Players. The team, parents and coaches made every effort to make this celebration special during these challenging times.

The fans are gone and only one spectator for each Varsity athlete are allowed in the gym. No spectators from the opposing team were permitted. Regardless of these limitations the team still rallied together to support their Seniors. The Freshman, JV and Varsity players worked tirelessly to prepare the gym with decorations and posters to support their Seniors. The teams were not permitted to stay for the game but did all they could leading up to start time. The Seniors were greeted by their teammates in the adorned hallway just before the start of warm ups. After a brief celebration, with masks, the JV and Freshman teams left, leaving the Varsity team alone to face their opponent. Yet, another terrible side effect of the Coronavirus.

Brookfield is a strong team with a good reputation for high level of play. The Rebels matched them on plays but ultimately they were out matched by the Bobcats, 11-25, 16-25, 13-25. All though the rebels suffered their first loss, the competition was a triumph in other ways. After weeks of conditioning dating back to mid July and a limited practice schedule, the Rebels were finally able to compete in their first game of the season. A season that almost didn’t happen. Players, parents, coaches and referees all proceed with caution and great respect for all those who have worked to keep this season a float.

The three teams under Coach Chadwick, Coach Ng and Coach Lee will continue to train, work hard and improve for each new contest. Although the season has had many challenges it is agreed that all teams, coaches and parents are very grateful for the opportunity to continue to play. The team earned 3 aces, 16 kills, 6 Blocks and 35 digs.
Kelly Ford led the team with 6 Kills. Giovanna Langguth picked up 10 digs and Bridget Martin contributed 9 digs to the defense. The next Match is against Abbott Tech on Saturday October 3rd.

Special thanks to the team managers, Nadjhae Mears, Miranda Subervi, Amelia Mcpartlin, Caitlyn Murray, Sean Crisci, Tatiana Linares.
